Horsehill vineyards

Horsehill Vineyard is a wine company that cooperates with Cal Poly Pomona and allows students, from different departments, to work on the creation of the wine and design. The goal for the 2020 Zinfandel and Rose label was to create a design that would embody the school and its students.

Design Team: Benjamin Altshule, Pamela Rongavilla, Jakkraphat Singraksatrakul, and Susana Barrios

Design

The design was inspired by Cal Poly Pomona’s rose garden and its gazebo. The rose garden is oftentimes the place where students like to relax or study between classes and where people go to when they visit the university. A die cut is incorporated in the Rose bottles to highlight Rose’s pink color. As well as a QR code so consumers can scan the code and find more information about the Horsehill vinery, giving consumers a chance to interact further with the label.

Typography

The Proxima Nova font family was chosen as the main typeface for the Horsehill Vineyards wine label. Proxima Nova communicates the elegance of Horsehill Vineyards wine and its prized lineage, while also highlighting Cal Poly Pomona student’s forward thinking with its modern feel.

Icons

Vine- The Zinfandel grape vines that line the front and back label highlight the Zinfandel grapes used to create the wine.Contain hidden “easter eggs” such as an Arabian horse, Cal Poly’s CLA building, as well as the CPP letters

Grapes- The Grapes Icon represents the wine that Cal Poly Pomona produces.

Gazebo- The gazebo is another recognizable part of the rose garden, created with linework that makes it easy to see on the label.

Colors

The colors are chosen from the Cal Poly Pomona website in The University Brand: A Bold New Look section under the Color Guidelines. The dark blue and the green are picked from the primary palette and the Gold/yellow are picked in the secondary colors palette. The dark blue color are used in the background to create an interesting contrast with gold/yellow and plain white illustration drawings. The green are used to represent the vine for the grape vines. The gold/yellow color create a sense of elegance in the texts and objects.

Sketches

The original sketch for the rose garden label contains aspects that ended in the final design such as the vines, gazebo, and roses. The sketch was drawn by team member, Pamela Rogavilla. The gazebo was then drawn digitally by Rongavilla and modified in Adobe Illustrator by me.
